Mixing over the course of the last twelve years, Tom Elmhirst has accumulated a long list of chart-topping tracks working with the likes of Adele, Amy Winehouse, The Black Keys, Cee Lo Green, Ellie Goulding, Florence & The Machine, Arcade Fire, Mark Ronson, U2, Peter Gabriel, Rufus Wainwright, and Goldfrapp, and many more. The list emphasizes Elmhirst’s position as one of the world’s leading mixers, something also reflected in his five Grammy Awards wins.
Drawing upon his experiences at SARM and his work with Trevor Horn, Elmhirst demonstrates a strong preference for working on analogue boards, and combining this with cutting edge technology. Having settled in New York, it is at Electric Lady Studios Studio C, where he creates his magic on his Neve VR72 console, an extensive collection of outboard, his favourite ATC SCM50 and Auratone monitors, and of course, the ubiquitous Pro Tools rig. For Elmhirst, Neve desks are central to his approach as a mixer, as are faders and outboard gear, however, he praises the use of Pro Tools, naming the combination of the two as, “marrying the best of the old and the best of the new”.
