Description
In this series, Lola Young heads into the studio with Jared Solomon and Manuka to explore the writing and production process for her genre-bending hit single, ‘Messy’. The American and British producers break down their work with one of the UK’s brightest musical stars, revealing how they combined influences, styles and sounds to tell her unique musical story.
The production team dive straight into the original Ableton session to deconstruct how the song was recorded and produced live in the studio. With Will on drums, Jared on bass and Connor on acoustic guitar, they retrace their steps working out an organic arrangement that supported Lola’s soulful vocal performance.
These live recordings were later overdubbed with rich vocal harmonies, bluesy guitars and surreal synth textures. The group reveal the inspiration behind each of these layers, sharing the creative tools and techniques that they used to add texture, tension and release. They also delve into the song’s distinctive lyrics, explaining how they added weight and character to the story with just a few carefully chosen words.
