Alex Watts

Artist/Mix Engineer/Live Mixing

Cotswolds, UK

About me

I primarily work with independent artists and in grass roots venues, delivering the best mixes I can. I produce and mix my own music, too, and have done so now for almost 20 years.

I studied Creative Music Technology (BSc) at Staffordshire University, graduating in 2012 with First Class Honours. I have worked in commercial studios as an assistant and engineer, before pursuing a career in live events and audio, currently working for d&b audiotechnik GB Ltd.

I've mixed countless live shows in venues from small pubs to medium cap venues, large festivals and outdoor events with systems of various sizes and including immersive events utilising d&b Soundscape.

I've worked in a handful of professional recording studios but most of my production is done at home or in demo facilities and venues that I have access to as a member of d&b audiotechnik.

I have written songs to brief for film and songs and instrumental music which have achieved radio play on BBC and regional stations. I have composed music and sound design, and mixed audio for indie films as well as indie artists in a range of genres from hiphop to folk.

I'm currently building my experience and client base as a mix engineer to give me more flexibility to work remotely and in studios where needed and mixing is something I truly enjoy, along with production and composition.

This was a fantastic series. Loved seeing the experimental elements. The thorough and clear way that Sylvia explained her process was great to see and I learned some tips that I look forward to trying out.

  • Charlie Puth • Charlie Puth • Changes

Really good insight into the arrangement of Changes, which has some inspiring layering of rhythmic elements. Love the honesty in Charlie's Q&A responses and his reassurance that songwriting requires patience and that there is no fixed process.

  • Tony Hoffer • The Kooks • Naive

This was such a great insight into the making of this track. I was wondering how much detail could be provided on the relatively simple sonic palette, but this is what makes the insight into the pre-production process really interesting and valuable. I also love this song, so it was great to learn how it came together.

  • Jack Antonoff • Lana del Rey • The Greatest & Mariners Apartment Complex

Loved this series and the work Jack Antonoff has done with Lana Del Rey. His ethos, concepts and approach to production is inspiring and I really enjoy his way of explaining these concepts with imaginative metaphors.
