Description

Step into Rue Boyer with Tony Hoffer as he rebuilds ‘Everything Is Everything’ by Phoenix from scratch. In this series, Hoffer recreates his original Sunset Sound mix entirely in the box, revealing how balance, saturation, unlikely inspiration, and intentional lo-fi texture define the band’s signature sound.

Originally created after the band arrived in LA with fully-formed ideas from Versailles, the track blends live drums with sampled elements and lo-fi textures. Chopped acoustic guitars treated like samples and vocal tones reshaped into synths add to the song’s unique sonic character. Starting from a blank session, Hoffer rebuilds the mix by shaping the stereo bus first, then balancing drums, bass, and guitars into a tight, cohesive vibe that’s equal parts dance and rock.

Rather than heavy processing, the sound comes from intentional color decisions by Hoffer. Light saturation, bit reduction, stereo widening, and subtle compression across multiple buses give the song its identity. By the end, the new mix closely mirrors the original, showing that the character comes from cumulative decisions, not any single piece of gear.
