Bio

Matthew Samuels (aka Boi-1da) is a Grammy award-winning hip-hop songwriter and producer from Kingston, Jamaica.

He moved to Canada when he was three and grew up in Toronto, Ontario. At the age of eight, he began to play Casio keyboard, and at fifteen, a friend introduced him to the Fruity Loops DAW. He soon won three consecutive Battle of the Beatmakers championships, then landed his first production work at the age of eighteen on the mixtape 'Room for Improvement' by Drake. His first major success with Drake came with the 2009 release 'Best I Ever Had', which he co-wrote and produced. It climbed to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. Since then, he has served as one of Drake’s closest and most frequent collaborators. In 2010, Boi-1da secured his first ever Hot 100 #1 as a songwriter with 'Not Afraid' by Eminem. Other artists he has written for or with include Big Sean, Birdman, Bizzle, Cardi B, Chris Brown, Lana Del Rey, DJ Khaled, French Montana, G-Eazy, The Game, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Nas, Rihanna, Rick Ross, Kelly Rowland, Travis Scott, Tinashe, and Kanye West.
