Jim-E Stack

Bio

James Harmon Stack, known professionally as Jim-E Stack, is a Los Angeles–based record producer, songwriter, and artist originally from San Francisco. Stack is widely respected as a genre-defying producer and songwriter whose thoughtful, rhythm-forward approach to music production has positioned him as a key creative force behind some of today’s most compelling albums. Known for his ability to bridge raw emotion with inspired sound design, Stack’s work spans alternative, indie, pop, R&B, and experimental styles, all grounded by his foundational training as a jazz drummer and his deep respect for musical texture.

In recent years, Jim-E Stack has emerged as a trusted collaborator to some of the most influential artists. He produced, along with Justin, Bon Iver’s SABLE, fABLE, a shimmering and hopeful evolution of Justin Vernon’s iconic sound, where Stack’s drum programming and synth work brought a vital new energy to Vernon’s introspective songwriting. Simultaneously, he produced and wrote the majority of Lorde’s VIRGIN, co-writing and producing standout tracks such as “What Was That,” “Man Of The Year,” and “Shapeshifter.” The album’s raw, minimalist aesthetic, driven by distorted drum machines and stripped-back vocals, bears Stack’s unmistakable fingerprints. Both albums achieved critical acclaim and notable commercial success with SABLE, fABLE debuting at No.1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales, Rock Albums, Alternative Albums, Rock & Alternative Albums, Americana/Folk Albums, and Vinyl Albums Charts and VIRGIN debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and securing multiple No.1 spots on Billboards Top Album, Rock & Alternative Albums, Alternative Albums, and Vinyl Album Charts. Additionally, Virgin also debuted at #1 on the Australian and New Zealand Album Charts, underscoring Stack’s ability to help craft records that resonate deeply with both critics and listeners.

Stack’s early musical education began behind the drum kit, inspired by a sparse but formative home collection of CDs from artists like Sade, Sting, and Jimmy Cliff. A San Francisco native, he honed his craft through middle school rock bands, high school jazz ensembles, and obsessive solo practice, developing an intuitive sense of groove and sonic character that continues to define his work.
Other production credits include Caroline Polachek, Haim, Aminé, Lola Young, Charli XCX, Gracie Abrams and Dominic Fike.
