Description

Justice returns to Rue Boyer to explore the making of ‘Dear Alan’, a critically-acclaimed track from their hit album ‘Hyperdrama’. Based around an old sample from 1978, the track blurs the lines between engineering, sound design, and composition, showcasing experimental techniques inspired by techno, hip-hop, and baroque music.

Watch the French duo break down the song’s signature rhythm section as they unpack their approach to sampling, synthesis, and live recording. They expand on their approach to MIDI programming, using subtle timing changes and ghost notes to add movement and groove to the track. They even go so far as to create the conditions for glitches, artifacts, and “happy accidents” — all crucial ingredients in their distinct brand of electronic music.

Across the series, you’ll learn how Justice integrates mixing and mastering directly into their production workflow. Experimenting with techniques like multiband dynamics processing, transient separation, and overdrive, they blur the lines between engineering, sound design, and composition. The result is a production style that focuses on the finished sound, so that mixing and mastering become an extension of the music.
