I don’t understand the layering of chords. They had different voicing on chords and combined them in the final mix?

Besides layering different chord voicings, I think it has to do more with layering different velocity (each velocity has different tone to it, besides volume) and stacking the same chord with different aliasing each time it's like adding distortion and fatness to the whole chord sound in a more natural way, just like mixers use analog summing in all their tracks. Just guessing, tho.
